Barnack -- Entertaining Picaresque Self-Help : This is an entertaining read, autobiographical, written from first person point of view, a sort of cross between a picaresque novel and self-help book, by a writer with an interesting tale to tell about kid rising from a rough beginning through various adventures and misadventures, developing an antisocial attitude, surviving a variety of wrong turns and errors, finding his “tribe” and eventually coming to terms with life enough to put it all down in a book. Frankly, I found it hard to tell how much of it is true vs. made up but, no matter, it was vastly entertaining. I’d like to quote some of the text but I doubt it would past muster with the Amazon filters so just take my word for it, the author doesn’t mince words or, to put it in more personal terms, he reminds me of my Marine Corps drill instructors in his choice of words. My take on the author’s story is that it starts off well, but bad stuff soon happens and his attitude becomes, he lacks control of life, thenceforth survives various slings and arrows in his life, curses the fates, with occasional respites with friends, lovers, and the like-minded, more bad stuff happens, and on like the repeatedly, somewhat accidentally discovers an interest and finds success until waylaid by another setback, never truly taking control of his life until the end, if that is believable. The book’s subtitle is “gritty guide to finding success in the face of failure.” Elsewhere he suggests its message is to reframe past failure such that disasters are perceived as good things. Missing from that guidance is analyzing why disasters happened to learn and prevent recurrence. ( Reviewed in the United States on January 25, 2022 )

Chris Patrick does not disappoint with his book "Disasters to Dreams." From adversity in his early childhood, and all throughout his life, Patrick chose to play the cards he was dealt and double down on life, AND it pays off. And, he certainly did not give up on his dreams. As living in Las Vegas and being a close friend and old neighbor that still lives In that neighborhood in Spring Valley, I certainly respect Chris for the man he had become, his family and friends I believe is his strength. Along the way, the author's incremental self-discovery is found around each new corner of a life that reads more like an obstacle course than it does a typical memoir. The author's ability to navigate those obstacles is instructive. Entertaining and insightful, it's a quick read with a good message. Recommended. Chris seems to teach his way through the book while telling intriguing stories that pair perfectly with his message. It reads smooth and keeps you engaged. So if your into getting inspired and going after your goals and dreams I highly suggest “Disasters to Dreams” for a read. You can’t help but be inspired.
